Every Item In This Issue Sold Within 24 Hours
Not weeks, months or even days. Less than 24 hours.
Issue #34
Welcome back to another Issue of Flip Weekly, a weekly newsletter that showcases some of the items I buy at thrift stores and garage sales that then go on to (hopefully) sell for a profit. Spoiler alert: this week I found some killer items that all sold within 24 hours. No waiting weeks, months, years or even days for them to sell, they were out the door extremely quick and in some cases a matter of hours. Enjoy and if you liked this weeks Issue feel free to leave a comment, shoot me an email or follow Flip Weekly on Instagram and Facebook.

What I’ve Bought
There’s a few reasons why you’re going to laugh at me for what I purchased this week.
Yes, I did pick up a commemorative plate.
When an apprentice mechanic starts working at an auto shop, they’re often tricked into going into town to purchase a make believe product, something like “blinker fluid“ or “elbow grease“. From what I’ve seen online, people in the reselling community like to tell newcomers to pick up beanie babies, sports video games or commemorative plates.
This week I picked up the latter: a commemorative plate. I was hesitant to pick this up because if it didn’t sell, I’d have a very breakable object laying around my home and if it did sell, I’d have to post a very breakable object. I scanned the plate with Google Lens and couldn’t find anything and I also did a search online for the text I found on the front and on the back - again, no luck.
Limited issue of the RAAF 75th anniversary collector’s plate.
My mind flashed back to all of the posts online mocking these sort of commemorative plates and to my mum’s old collection of Franklin Mint Princess Diana plates which struggle to sell for $10.00 on eBay. All of that came to the front but I couldn't stop thinking that military and war items can be extremely collectible and maybe, just maybe, this Royal Australian Air Force "limited issue" plate would be snapped up by a collector. After all, it is a "limited issue", it is something I can't find online, it is from 1996 and it is something to do with the Royal Australian Air Force. It's $5, let's take a gamble, the worst that can happen is inherent mocking and $5 down the drain. The best that can happen is we validate military commemorative plates and make a bit of money.
Think I didn’t know much about plates? Wait until I talk to you about hair curlers.
Looks like a microphone to me.
After striking out again at garage sales, I had some cash burning a hole in my wallet. Instead of treating myself to a nice meal or depositing the money back into my bank account, I did what you and I would have done: started hunting Marketplace for a deal. Now when I say Marketplace, I don’t mean the regular Facebook Marketplace. I’ve found most of my deals in the past looking in the local buy/swap/sell Facebook groups. Most of the items are cross-listed to regular Marketplace, but when you’re in the groups you can easily switch the feed to show newest listings first. Yes, this is possible on regular Marketplace but I’ve found it isn’t as reliable.
So I jump onto my local buy/swap/sell at 4:03pm, sort the listings to New and I find the above at 4:07pm. Growing up with sisters, I know that GHD is a good brand. That’s the only thing I know about this category by the way, I don’t know how they work without burning your hair, I don’t know model numbers or what makes a good brand or bad brand.. just GHD = good. This is a “GHD Classic Curve Wand“ so I look it up not knowing that I’d be bombarded by their ads for the foreseeable future.
Note: don’t visit their website unless you want to get served GHD ads.
It has a RRP of $280 and is listed at $224 brand new on their website. That’s a good sign for a $20 Marketplace deal that has the description “only used once“. I take a look at eBay active and sold comps and I'm seeing 68 active listings and 55 sold - a sell through rate of 84.62%. Active listings within Australia start at $175 which includes the box. I'm thinking if I can get this for $20, I should be able to list it for $99.95 and have a quick sale, possibly even same day, and net a $50 profit after all fees.
The numbers work for me, so I send my first message 2 minutes later just asking if the seller has the box. Unfortunately they don't. I contemplate for a minute or two and at 4:14pm I tell the seller please consider it sold and that I can leave right now with cash. The seller gives me the go ahead and I'm back home by 5pm and have it photographed and listed by 5:07pm.
On Sunday evening I was on my way to Officeworks to pick up some satchels and thought I’d stop in at the thrift store. I usually avoid the thrift on the weekends as it’s usually overcrowded and barren on stock. However, at 3pm on a Sunday? Pretty much empty. I’m glad I stopped in because I found this beauty of a jacket.
Apologies for the color distortion.
I don’t know anything about the brand, but when you’re flicking through clothing you should be able to identify something that is well made. The brand is called Stormtech and picking it up you could instantly feel the weight of it and that it was a well made jacket. The outside was waterproof and inside was a comfortable fleece material with zip up pockets all around it. You can see on the front the rabbit, it’s the logo for the NRL sporting team South Sydney Rabbitohs. So we have a well made, high quality jacket that’s sports themed for $25. Let’s take a look at comps.
Only 2 available, 5 watchers between them.
Wow, both were originally listed for $400.00 and they have people watching them! How about sold comps?
For a jacket!
The sold comps are of another version and it sort of looks familiar. I know why! It was always worn by Russell Crowe whenever he attended games.
Russell is one of the owners of the team.
This is a definite pickup, I buy it and list immediately once I get home for $199.95 - a crazy amount given the $25 purchase price, you should keep an eye out for the brand in the jacket section. Will it sell? Let’s find out.
Oh look, more clothes.
I know what you’re thinking… more clothes, like a disappointed kid on Christmas morning when they feel that the present is soft. However, any reseller would love to get their hands on this t-shirt and I’ll tell you why. First, it’s from 2011 and despite looking like a fan-made screen printed tee, it’s actually official NRL (Australian Rugby League) merchandise. It’s rare, hard to find and features one of the clubs most popular players. It cost me just $5 and I knew it was going to be popular so I listed it online for $99.95.
What I Sold
Okay, there will be no more clowning.
Who would have guessed? Probably you.
As I said at the beginning of this newsletter, I was unsure how this would play out. I didn't know anything about this item besides it's a plate from 1996 celebrating the Australian Royal Air Force. I listed it for $49.95 to test the waters and it sold 10 hours later.
I'd honestly love to know more about this category and why this individual bought the plate at 4am in the morning. Did it sell because it's a limited edition? Was it because it was the 75th anniversary and it's a special year? Someone that served in the RAAF? Maybe it was just the graphic and bought by a plate collector? Without knowing the answers to these questions I can't really say too much about the category moving forward... except I'll keep an eye out for military and war related items in the thrift and garage sales.
Out the door within 24 hours!
Listed at 5:07pm and sold at 9:04pm - just under 4 hours. There is nothing better than having a high quality item perfectly priced where it sells within just 4 hours. That very short trip up the road on a Sunday afternoon turned my $20 note into $100 before hitting the sack for the day. Keep an eye out for GHD branded items on Marketplace and don’t worry if they don’t have the original box or sleeves, this is evident they still sell well... and fast.
Listed and sold for $99.95!
Gone in under 24 hours! This sale was to a woman who was gifting the shirt to her husband - she actually included a buyers note, my first time ever getting one of these. She said:
Buyer's note: can you please gift wrap it as it will be a 20 year anniversary gift for my husband who is a die hard parra fan
I thought this was pretty cute so I went out and picked up some blue tissue paper and a yellow ribbon and gift wrapped this as best as I could. The t-shirt was $5 and sold for $99.95 - I don’t have any problems with a gift wrap request and putting in that extra little bit of effort should get me some killer feedback.
Beautiful wrapping.
