My Top 10 Flips of 2024
2024 has come to an end and it's time to show you my best flips for the year.
Issue #47
I was honestly shocked going through all of my 2024 flips - 2024 has gone by so quick yet the amount of items I’ve sold is so vast that it’s hard to believe it all happened within the span of 12 months. I try and aim for an average sale price of $100 however I have been known to pick up something in the $30-$50 range if I think it’s unique or really cool. Every single item in this Issue has a selling price of over $100 so if you see it here and then see it in the wild, you’ll know to pick it up.
With 2024 coming to an end, I wanted to let you know that 2025 is going to be even bigger and better so I hope you stick around for the ride. With that said, there is no better way to end the year than with an unoriginal, hacky, BuzzFeed style top 10 list so here we go.
In This Issue
Top 10 Flips of 2024
$4 into $185.00. Massive Warhammer bundle at a thrift store.
#10: Watchers of the Throne The Regent's Shadow Warhammer 40k Paperback
To kick things off we have a Warhammer book that I found in a thrift store for just $4. This was just 1 of a huge bundle of donated Warhammer books, including some that were part of The Horus Heresy series which is made up of 64 books. This series is highly sought after and you can see this most recent sale in December for an incomplete set. Imagine if you found all 64 in a thrift store or garage sale!
A complete series might net you around $5,000 given these comps.
My average sale price of all of the Warhammer books I sold in 2024 was $106.15 so this is a book series that you will 100% want to pick up if you come across it.
#9: Panasonic DMR-ES35V DVD VCR Combo Player DVD Recorder & Remote
$10 into $199.95. Found at a garage sale.
Garage sales are the perfect place to find electronics cheap. This VCR player was picked up for $10 which is the price you want to be aiming for.
I made a killing from this garage sale.
Whenever I find something like this my general rule of thumb is to expect a sale price of around $50 on Marketplace or $100 on eBay. The majority of these players fit within an Australia Post large box which is shipped off for approximately $20. Considering that, plus eBay fees and a cost of goods of $10, the profit sits at a healthy $53. Now, if we get lucky and find a player that has all of the cables, works perfectly, has the remote, is a sort after brand and is a dual DVD/VHS combo we can list for a premium which is what I did for this find. The unit sold within 4 days and since selling, the comps have only gone up.
A full $100 more than mine.
Sold for $269 even without a remote.
In order to find these sort of units I think the best place to look is garage sales. You can get lucky at a thrift store but most have seemingly caught on. Plus, I’ve found that if a thrift store is selling a VCR player, they don’t really test them, they power it on and that’s it. I’ve gotten burnt like that before so just be aware that you will want to test your electronics before listing them for sale on eBay.
$8 into $200.00. Found in a thrift store.
#8: Signed By Olivia Newton-John Don’t Stop Believin' (2019, Hardcover) Book
I’m the King of autographed books and whilst it’s distasteful to say, if you find a signed book from a legend like Olivia Newtown-John who has unfortunately passed away you’re going to make a bit of money from it. Olivia passed away in August 2022 and is still beloved by people all around the world with signed posters and other merchandise selling for thousands of dollars.
An Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta signed leather jacket also sold for $1,800.
This signed book was sold in just 6 hours for $200.00 plus an additional $60 postage as it was off to the United States. If you’re not looking at the first few pages in biographies for a signature you’re missing out.
$4 into $249.99. Thrift store find.
#7: Spanian: The Unfiltered Hood Life by Spanian (Paperback, 2021)
Speaking of books, autographs aren’t the only thing to look out for - the other big sellers are OOP books - that is, out of print books. These are books that had a limited run with the printers and are no longer being made. The above book, Spanian: The Unfiltered Hood Life is just 1 example with copies being sold for up to $300 each.
You wont find this book much cheaper than this.
With a sell through rate of over 240%, it’s an example of how Out Of Print books can sell really well. Whilst you can’t familiarize yourself with every single out of print book, a helpful exercise is to jump onto eBay Sold Listings and search for OOP Book, you’ll be surprised with what you can find.
You’d expect these old books to sell for $1 each in a thrift store.
Who knew there were banned Dr Seuss books?
$2 into $250.00. Found in a thrift store.
#6: Sydney Sega World Australia 1997 Baseball Cap Tails BNWT
April, 2024 was my first introduction to Sega World Sydney. If you’re unfamiliar with it, here’s what I had to say about it:
If we do a quick Google search for Sega World Sydney we can see that it was a Sega branded amusement park that opened in 1997 and closed just 3 years later in 2000. 3 years isn’t a very long time for an amusement park to be open so guess what? It’s developed a bit of a cult following. If you’re unfamiliar with Sega it’s basically a video game / multimedia company. Heard of Sonic the Hedgehog? That’s about all you need to know to follow along.
Living in Sydney this is a category I thought I’d come across more often however it’s extremely rare and hard to find merchandise from this defunct amusement park. If you do find something, boy oh boy are you in for a payday. Just take a look at this sale of a coffee mug from just last week.
I love that you’re paying $400 for a coffee mug and also have to pay $18 for postage. No free post around here.
When I found the Sega World Sydney hat I wasn’t familiar with the amusement park. I didn’t visit as a kid and because I’m not exactly a gamer or someone that follows pop culture too much so the only reason I looked it up was because the logo looked kinda old. I didn’t find any exact comps but I did see the active listings where a CD was selling for $600 and an access card was selling for $300+. Common sense says that a hat would sell for a decent amount. I listed it up for $299.99 and it sold 4 days later for $249.99 on a best offer. There’s no doubt in my mind if I didn’t accept the best offer it would sell for full price.
$40 into $280.00 via a thrift store.
#5: 2007 Transformers Animated Bulkhead Leader Class Action Figure BNIB
We have to go all the way back to February, 2024 for this sale of a complete in box Transformers action figure. In February I was very new to flipping so once this Transformers action figure sold for $280.00 I tended to pick up any sealed Transformers toy I could find, whether it was at a thrift store or a garage sale. It’s served me well however I’ve found that nowadays I’m more strict - I don’t want to buy just any, I want it to either be brand new (like released in the past month or so) or very old. The inbetween stuff, at least for me, tends to sell quite slow. With that said, $40 into $280 is still a great flip especially when I was basically an amateur.
$20 into $299.99. Found during the Garage Sale Trail.
#4: Sega World Sydney T-Shirt Sonic The Hedgehog
Thanks to the #6 find in this list, I became aware of how valuable Sega World Sydney merchandise was, so of course I was constantly on the look out. At this years Garage Sale Trail I struck up a conversation with a couple that were getting rid of a ton of collectibles and after buying a SEGA VHS, the husband went inside and brought this out - a mint condition Sega World Sydney t-shirt that he wanted just $20 for. I immediately grabbed it and added it to my pile and later that evening I listed it up for $300.00 where it sold within hours. I highly recommend checking out Issue #41 “The Epic Conclusion Of Garage Sale Trail 2024“ because there’s a lot of high priced sales that you’ll want to keep an eye out for.
$31 into $370.00. Found at a thrift store.
#3: Kare Kano His Her Circumstances Vol 1-21 Manga Complete Set
We’re now in the top 3 and we come across a huge 21 volume book set of manga which I’m pretty sure was my introduction to the category. We have to go back to January for this sale and it was $31 into $370 in just a few days. I’ve written a lot about manga including what to buy, how to spot it and which ones to avoid so I recommend jumping back through Issues to learn a bit more about it.
$50 into $499.95. Rare Marketplace pickup for me.
#2: Sailor Moon VHS Anime Volume 1-13 + Uncut Movie
If you’re not finding VCR players at garage sales, you might get lucky and find the actual VHS tapes. Whilst a large majority are worthless, there are some that are worth their weight in gold, including the ever popular Sailon Moon series.
$15 into $550.00 via a thrift store.
#1: Canberra Raiders 1997 Nike Super League Jersey
You’ve made it to my best flip of 2024 and it’s something that sold recently, most likely for a Christmas present. We have the NRL Canberra Raiders jersey that was picked up at a thrift store for just $15 and has gone on to sell for $550. It’s pretty crazy to think about it - you walk into a thrift store with just $15 and looking to make some extra money buying items to resell on eBay and you walk out with a piece of fabric that’s valued at over $500. It really does show you just how lucrative this hobby can be.
With the cost of living rising, groceries becoming more and more expensive, where else can you enter a retail store and walk out with an item that is valued at over 35 times what it will sell for? Whilst I bag out thrift stores constantly, especially over on Instagram, they maintain their status as a great place to find items to resell online for a profit.
